Why Is Sarakiniko Beach So Unique?

Sarakiniko is a beach unlike anywhere else in Milos, or really, anywhere else in the world. It’s not your typical sandy or pebble beach with sunbeds. Sarakiniko went viral in 2016 music video for “This Girl” (Kungs remix) this is when it started gaining all the attention it deserves.

The rock formations are extraordinary, they are all different shapes and sizes with white chalky surface, hidden caves to explore, small inlet with shallow, cenote with hidden blue lagoons that have impossibly clear water which is perfect for swimming.

Sarakiniko’s name derived from “Sarakinoi” the Greek word for Saracens, the Arab pirates who used the caves here as hideouts during the Middle Ages. This unique lunar landscape beach was shaped over time by volcanic white rock, wind, and waves, and with barely any vegetation, the whole place really does feel like you have landed on the moon.

By midday, the white stone almost glows, and the crystal clear electric blue water set against it absolutely stunning. It is easy to see why it is the most photographed spot on the island. Then is also a shipwreck, an old tanker that crashed into the rocks during a storm back in 2003, and has since quietly become one of the best snorkelling spots on the island on a calm day. It’s the kind of place that rewards the curious.

The best way to do Sarakiniko is to treat it like an experience rather than just a beach day. This isn’t really a “lay down your towel and order a cocktail” vibe. Visiting Sarakiniko without knowing what to expect means you’ll likely miss half of what makes it so special.

✦ Check the wind before visiting Sarakiniko beach, it faces north so receives strong Aegean winds which can make the water rough and dangerous. When the winds are strong, no swimming or cliff jumping is allowed for your own safety. Use windy.com the night before.

Tip: Combine with nearby spots: Papafragas Caves, Klima fishing village, and Mandrakia are all a short drive away on the Norther coast, make a day of it.
