The Unique Design

Biophilia can be noticed in every aspect, from the architecture, programming, and signature amenities. Upon arrival, the first thing you’ll notice is a driveway bordered by rich shrubs, guiding you past the mature trees on the site, especially the towering 12-meter-tall Rain Tree (Samanea saman) on one side and an Indian Beech tree (Millettia pinnata) on the other. These two iconic trees remain rooted in their original locations, standing as living symbols of the resort’s promise to integrate design seamlessly with nature.

The Rain Tree’s wide, umbrella-like canopy welcomes you into the heart of the rainforest. This journey brings you to an open-air lobby inspired by the rainforest canopy. Everywhere you look, vines and foliage embrace the lattice framework, seamlessly integrating the resort with the lush landscape.

Designed to resemble the seed pods of the Purple Millettia (Callerya atropurpurea), these treehouses overlook the Upper Seletar Reservoir and seamlessly blends into nature. Bark-imprinted walls and a spine-like spiral staircase pay homage to the landscape surrounding Mandai Rainforest Resort in Singapore.

The 24 treehouses offer a cosy, sheltered retreat, each with a private patio elevated above the ground. The nearby five-story resort building, housing 314 rooms and suites along with a rooftop, rise vertically through the forest layers, showcasing views of the rainforest, gardens, and reservoir. The clever elevation of the hotel’s wings also allows for the free movement of local wildlife passing through.

The Rooms

Raised on columns, the tiled treehouses provide a series of luxury rooms for guests, modelled on a seed pod. The unique layers of the rainforest from the forest floor to the canopy can be seen in the room designs. Antique lithographs showcase Singapore’s native wildlife, featuring creatures like the lesser mousedeer, white-collared kingfisher, Sumatran flying dragon, and grey-headed fish eagle.

Inside, the predominantly wooden pods are arranged around a main ensuite bedroom, which leads out to a sheltered terrace via sliding doors.

Thoughtfully designed for sustainability, the rooms feature fully openable windows that allow natural ventilation, maintaining ambient temperatures that reflect the cool climate of tropical rainforests. Each room includes an interactive display monitoring power use, offering gentle reminders when consumption goes beyond recommended levels. Rainwater is also collected and reused for flushing systems throughout the resort. These eco-conscious details are central to every stay, helping the resort achieve Singapore’s Green Mark Platinum certification as the first-ever Super Low Energy (SLE) resort.

Wellness

Drawing from centuries-old Asian traditions, Banyan Tree Spa at Mandai Rainforest Resort presents an intimate sanctuary where spa pavilions and suites blend seamlessly with the natural surroundings.

The three treatment pods are inspired by the protective keratin scales of the Sunda pangolin, reflected in their unique façades. Just as the pangolin’s scales offer protection, these pods create a tranquil and sheltered environment.

Inside, expert therapists provide rejuvenating treatments designed to restore mind and body. In addition to the iconic pods, the spa includes three other treatment rooms, each crafted to promote physical, mental, and spiritual renewal. The award-winning Banyan Tree Spa experience is rooted in time-honored techniques and the use of natural aromatic oils, herbs, and spices.
