A Look Inside: Danieli, Venezia, Four Seasons Venice

For more than two centuries, Danieli has occupied one of the most recognisable addresses in Venice, directly on the Riva degli Schiavoni beside the Doge’s Palace and a short walk from Piazza San Marco. Now, after a three-year restoration, the historic hotel has reopened as Danieli, Venezia, A Four Seasons Hotel, marking the Four Seasons Venice debut and a new chapter for one of the city’s best-known grand hotels.

The Four Seasons arrival also marks the brand’s fourth Italian property, following Four Seasons hotels in Milan and Florence, as well as San Domenico Palace in Taormina. But Danieli brings considerably more history to the portfolio, in fact, it is Venice’s oldest continuously operating hotel, but the building itself is considerably older than its life as a hotel. Palazzo Dandolo, the original heart of Danieli, dates to the 14th century and was built as the residence of the noble Dandolo family. It became a hotel in 1822 under Giuseppe Dal Niel, who gave it the name Danieli.

Today, Danieli spans three adjoining palazzi: the historic Palazzo Dandolo, Palazzo Casa Nuova and Palazzo Danieli Excelsior. The latter two were added during the hotel’s expansion in the 19th and 20th centuries, creating the unique layered architectural identity that remains one of Danieli’s defining features.

Four Seasons has approached the restoration with the building’s history firmly intact. French interior designer Pierre-Yves Rochon has overseen the restoration of Palazzo Dandolo and Palazzo Casa Nuova, introducing more light, softer colours and a contemporary interpretation of Venetian style while retaining the property’s historic architecture and craftsmanship. Danieli is not Pierre-Yves Rochon’s first Four Seasons project. The French designer is also behind the interiors of the iconic Four Seasons Hotel Firenze and the Four Seasons George V.

Palazzo Dandolo is where the restoration feels most closely tied to the building’s original character. The lobby’s quatrefoil ceiling has been carefully restored, bringing its gilded detailing back into focus, while the grand staircase, columns and stonework have been refurbished throughout. The Murano chandeliers have also been restored, preserving the ornate details that distinguish the historic palazzo.

Rooms and Suites At Danieli, Venezia, Four Seasons Venice

The current rooms and suites are located within Palazzo Dandolo and Palazzo Casa Nuova, overlooking the Lagoon, the city’s canals, or its rooftops, offering ever-changing perspectives of Venice. The restoration offers an expanded collection of Junior Suites and One-Bedroom Suites. Also a large number of rooms and suites connect, which matters more than it sounds for anyone travelling as a family or a group.

Pierre-Yves Rochon’s redesign brings a more contemporary sense of space to the accommodation, with expanded living areas, lighter colour schemes and discreet technology. The bespoke in-room media wall integrates the television into a curated composition of artwork and decorative objects. Automated curtains, customizable lighting scenes and an intuitive climate control system further personalize the guest experience.

For the best lagoon views, the Premium Lagoon-View Room is the starting point, with direct views across the Venetian Lagoon. For more space, the Premium Lagoon-View Suite is a great option. While, Grand Lagoon-View Suite offers views of Venetian Lagoon and Grand Canal.

For a more historic interpretation of the Danieli experience, the Grand Dandolo Suite is the one to book. Set within Palazzo Dandolo, it come with a separate living room and dining area, and views towards the surrounding palaces and Venetian laneways rather than the lagoon. Here, the attraction is the building itself.

At the top end, the Presidential Suite occupies the fourth floor of Palazzo Dandolo, with views towards the Venetian Lagoon and San Giorgio Island. The Doge Dandolo Royal Suite, meanwhile, offers a combines the historic character of Palazzo Dandolo with lagoon-facing views and private balconies.

Terrazza Danieli

If there is one space at Danieli that has always carried its own reputation, it is Terrazza Danieli, the rooftop restaurant on the fifth floor overlooking the Lagoon. The restoration has changed the atmosphere without attempting to compete with the view. Darker finishes have been replaced with pastel shades, azure accents, muted gold and mirrored surfaces. While, the outdoor terrace echoes the warm terracotta tones of the historic façade, ensuring that the breathtaking panorama remains the true focal point of the experience.

Executive Chef Adriano Rausa oversees a contemporary Italian menu with a Venetian influence, using seasonal ingredients and long-standing relationships with local producers. Several signature dishes are finished tableside, adding a measured element of theatre to the experience. For breakfast, the terrace is particularly difficult to beat. By evening, the same view takes on a different character as the lagoon darkens and the city lights begin to appear.

At ground level, Bar Dandolo offers the more traditional expression of Danieli. It sits beside the hotel’s four-storey courtyard atrium, surrounded by decorated stone arches and open balustraded staircases. Inside, nine Corinthian columns, Murano chandeliers and a two-storey sculpted fireplace reinforce the sense that this is infact a historic palazzo.

A Landmark Location

Location has always been one of Danieli’s defining advantages, and the arrival of Four Seasons has not altered that. The hotel sits on the Riva degli Schiavoni, just steps from Piazza San Marco, the Doge’s Palace and St Mark’s Basilica, with the Venetian Lagoon immediately beyond the waterfront. Four Seasons also describes the property as having a lagoon-edge location, giving it direct access to water taxis and vaporetti for journeys to the surrounding islands.

For anyone comparing the leading luxury hotels in Venice, Danieli Four Seasons Venice’s setting is difficult to replicate. Danieli is part of the historic centre rather than removed from it, with the city’s major landmarks, waterfront and network of waterways all within immediate reach.

The Four Seasons offering extends beyond the hotel itself, with a series of experiences built around Venice’s culture, craftsmanship and lagoon. Guests can visit hidden Venetian palace gardens, explore Murano, Burano and Torcello, take to the lagoon aboard a vintage fishing vessel or try traditional Venetian rowing. There is also the option to visit the city’s tidal floodgate system or meet a Venetian doyenne in her private palazzo on the Grand Canal.
